Brazil’s National Symbol Is Disappearing in the Wild

These furry fellows are golden lion tamarins at Santa Ana Zoo. Native to the southeastern coastal forests of Brazil, their signature feature is a silky, gold coat and long mane. In the 1970s, only a couple hundred tamarins were left in the wild due to habitat loss and the pet trade. Today, conservation efforts have been in effect around the world to support their populations.
