The Giant Garter Snake May Be Venomous, but It Won’t Hurt You

Though the giant garter snake looks intimidating, you’ve no reason to fear it. Native to the wetlands of central California, these aquatic creatures pose no risk to humans. The snake’s mild venom is only potent enough to subdue its prey, primarily consisting of fish and frogs. Considered the largest of the garter snake family, they can reach up to 65 inches in length. Unfortunately, destruction of their wetland habitats has left the species vulnerable, so conservation efforts are underway.
