Kane Hodder is known as the world’s most prolific on-screen murderer, but talking to him is easy. He’s real, he’s honest, he’s … nice! He’s also played a lot of senseless murderers and has killed too many people to count on-screen. From Jason Voorhees (who he played four times) of the “Friday the 13th” franchise, to Victor Crowley of the “Hatchet” movie series, Kane knows a thing or two about the horror genre. His career is the kind dreams are made of; Kane transformed from a stuntman to a star practically overnight and he has been living the dream (er, nightmare?) ever since.

As a life-long scary movie fan myself, I was dying to know what his favorite horror movies are and what the story is behind his appreciation for each one. When I heard we were doing a video about him, I jumped at the chance to ask him myself. Just in time for Halloween, here’s a guide to the scariest movies from the world’s scariest, nicest guy. Queue up your Amazon watch list and prepare to binge because you won’t be sleeping after these.

The Scariest Movies According to Kane Hodder

He’s been a fan of scary movies since he was a kid. Here, Kane Hodder takes us on a journey through what scared him on screen from his earliest days to today.

#6 The Birds

Kane Hodder saw “The Birds” as a kid and it was the first film that scared the life out of him, so it wins a spot on this list. In fact, he couldn’t even sleep after. He admits that it might not hold up to today’s standards of horror, but a movie about “a creature that you want to love, that’s killing people, is pretty disturbing. I had recurring nightmares about the woman with her eyes pecked out.”

#5 Paranormal Activity

The scariest movies do things a little bit differently and have a special place in Kane’s dark heart. The admittedly “well done” “Paranormal Activity” struck a chord with him in more ways than one. The combination of recorded/found footage mixed with a terrifying haunting was so fascinating to Hodder that it tipped him over the edge and led him to co-found Hollywood Ghost Hunters with his long-time friend Rick McCallum. The group now goes out to hunt real paranormal activity whenever they get the opportunity.

#4 The Shining

When it comes to acting scary, Kane Hodder believes that Jack Nicholson is at the top of the list with his performance in “The Shining.”

“His performance is simply incredible. His facial expressions and his voice really made the part and, honestly, made the movie. He became one of my favorite actors to watch after that.”

While he was working on “The Killer and I” series with Mike Aloisi (Kane's biographer and the “I” in “The Killer and I”), Kane got to visit The Stanley Hotel whose ghost stories inspired Stephen King to write the book; which led to the movie. Kane loved being there in person and felt lucky to experience the spooky place for himself.

#3 Halloween

If “The Shining” was all about the facial expressions and voice of Jack Nicholson, Kane’s next favorite scary movie is pretty much the exact opposite. The very first “Halloween” movie, which came out before the “Friday the 13th” movies, really impressed him.

“I love that character. I appreciated watching it because it’s so much more difficult to look scary when you can’t use your voice or your facial expressions. When you can be {scary}, it’s really effective. I always kept that in mind when I was in the position to play Jason. My goal was to always make it look natural. I didn’t want to over act and just be a guy in a mask trying to look scary.”

Halloween the scariest movie

#2 Blair Witch Project

When the “Blair Witch Project” was first released, there was a lot of hubbub about whether it actually was found footage and whether or not it really happened.

“I appreciate something different in a scary movie, whether it’s the topic or the format. The way they made it feel when this was released, the hype about it; I appreciate that.”

#1 The Exorcist

What is the scariest movie of all time according to Kane Hodder? None other than the 1973 original “The Exorcist.”

“You have to be old enough to have seen it in theaters when it was first released to get the full impact. It’s still good this much later, but when you saw the news about people feeling possessed after seeing the movie … When you got into the theater you thought: what’s going to happen to me?!”
