Vicki Sumner has stage IV breast cancer, but when she wears her henna crown, she says it’s as if people don’t see her sickness. Instead, they see beautiful artwork, which makes Sumner feel empowered. That’s thanks to the intricate work of henna artist Sarah Walters. Henna crowns are intricate henna designs applied to the scalp, typically following hair loss caused by chemotherapy. As an alternative to wigs or hats, a beautiful henna design can create an uplifting experience for a patient during a time that is often filled with worry and stress. Though her henna tattoos are temporary, for Walter’s clients, they make a world of difference.
