Fins of Fashion: The Alaskan Artist Creating Salmon Skin Stilettos

As a member of the Kenaitze Indian Tribe in Alaska, artist Joel Isaak grew up intimately connected to the land—hunting, fishing, and spending the bulk of his time outdoors. Today, Isaak uses those experiences to create beautiful handmade objects and clothing out of fish skin. Using a mixture of traditional and modern techniques, he has fashioned a variety of unique objects, including masks, high heels, dresses and even a motorcycle jacket. And just as his ancestors did, Isaak catches, skins, tans and consumes all of the fish that he uses in his art.

This Great Big Story was made in partnership with the all-new 2018 Camry.
