Thailand is home to over 40,000 Buddhist temples, but none of them are quite like Wat Plai Laem. Completed in 2004, the site is a collection of temples and statues on Thailand's second largest island, Koh Samui. One of Wat Plai Laem’s most eye-catching figures is a nearly 100-foot tall statue of Buddha, painted in bright red, white and gold. Visitors seeking a place for quiet reflection may also notice the central statue of Guanyin, the Buddhist goddess of compassion and mercy. Represented with 18 arms and brilliantly decorated, the massive figure adorns the top of the main temple.
