California’s Homecoming Project Helps the Formerly Incarcerated Come Home

At only 18 years old, Jesse Vasquez was sentenced to two life sentences. At 36, his sentence was commuted, and he was given a chance at a fresh start, but not after spending most of his adult life in prison. In need of a place to live, Vasquez reached out to the Homecoming Project, a transitional housing program that matches formerly incarcerated people with homeowners who have space for rent. He was paired with host Candi Thorton and began a new life in a comfortable apartment in Oakland, California. Like a mom to Vasquez, Thornton paved the way for him to feel comfortable in his new community.
