The Teens Launching Africa’s First Private Satellite

It’s one thing to metaphorically reach for the stars, but what if teenagers could actually explore space? Bjarke Gotfredsen, the founder of an electronics and technology development company called XinaBox, is helping make that happen for students in Cape Town, South Africa. He built dozens of handheld micro sensors with the goal of allowing high schoolers to send their own satellites into orbit. What’s more, Gotfredsen even purchased Africa’s first privately owned satellite to give the students a platform for operating their own classroom ground control.

This Great Big Story was made in partnership with IBM.
