The Voice of Hollywood in Communist Romania

In communist Romania, buying a VCR off the black market was a path to salvation—or, at least, a respite from heavily censored programming on the country’s one and only television network. There was no sex, no religion, no consumerism to be seen on the channel. It was Irina Margareta Nistor’s job to make sure nothing slipped through the cracks. Then, in 1985, a businessman approached her with a curious offer: be the dubbed voice for thousands of illegally distributed, completely uncensored films.
